Dennys Global Politics: Libya: Rebels Sell Us 1st Oil Production

NATO bombs Tripoli, Libya/Getty Images

Dennys Global Politics: Libya: Rebels Sell Us 1st Oil Production: "From Denny: Sec. of State Hillary Clinton is pleased to report the rebels are producing oil for the West, selling us their first batch. Can it be America has finally found someone willing to repay us for all the blood and money we have spent on them?

What a nice change of pace is this turn of events. My Democrats may finally be getting practical and downright useful instead of useless."

Funny Jon Stewart Disses Pakistan On Hiding Secret Helicopter Tail

Jon Stewart

From Denny:  Stewart lampoons Pakistan on their incompetence or their lying about the whereabouts of Bin Laden. Either way they lose. Either they were stupid or they were involved up to their proverbial eyeballs. OK, Stewart mentions that reference in the cruder terms of Man Speak that will have you laughing till your sides hurt.

Petulant Pakistan thumbs their nose at America and says they will keep their play toy helicopter tail full of sensitive technology the Chinese paid them to procure so it could be reverse engineered. Hint to the Chinese: You lose. It's probably a huge freaking lie in the first place and they wanted to infect your computers just like Iran. That calls for a real Hehehehe. Oh, well, all's fair in waging cyberwar.

Jon Stewart Interviews Egypt Revolution Activist Gigi Ibrahim

From Denny: Stewart dishes out the political satire in a semi-serious interview aimed at exposing how for decades American policy has had little to do with the reality of every day Egyptians.

What is so funny about the experience of this young woman is how she became involved in the Egypt Revolution this past January in Tahrir Square.  She went to a class, "The Social Mobilization Under Authoritarian Regime," at the American University in Cairo.

It was there she learned from a prominent Middle Eastern blogger about the opposition movement that had been ongoing in her own country.  The opposition movement was so underground few people knew how to contact them.  She learned their history and what was happening recently and how to join the protests.

Democrats: 400 Groups Rally This Weekend 4 Jobs and Votes

Liberal groups march in Washington, D.C. this weekend to press for jobs and encourage voting.

From Denny: Are you tired of the unending bizarre nonsense coming out of the mouths of the extreme right like conservative talk show hosts Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh?

Well, the Democrats are finally starting to organize the yardcats, bringing them to the government's back yard. Banding together in solidarity are 400 groups comprised of labor unions as well as progressive and civil rights groups.

Creep Factor: Feds Turning X-Rays on Americans to Catch Terrorists?

Sporting events, shopping malls, airports: all places you get radiated without your knowledge by our government after terrorists and drug cartels.

From Denny:  So what's next in the paranoia department for Americans?  Do we have to worry about our government agents using radiation technology anonymously as we attend a football game or visit a shopping mall - all in the day's work of catching drug cartels or terrorists with contraband or bombs?

Mobile X-rays vans are now cruising our streets all in the interest of combating terrorism.  The feds are randomly scanning cars and trucks everywhere.  Besides our privacy concerns, how about our serious health concerns?

What Is Really Happening In This BP Claims Process?

From Denny: This is a local Baton Rouge, Louisiana, news story detailing the shabby treatment from the claims fund manager, Kenneth Feinberg, and BP toward local restaurant owners. Business is down about 40 percent in the Baton Rouge area since this oil spill disaster occurred and the oil moratorium was put in place.

Restaurants run on a small profit margin. No one knows how long these beloved institutions can stay in business unless something changes. These are the well established business people. What is happening to small business owners who have not had decades to set aside some cash for emergencies like this one?

White House Staff Shakeup: Who Stays, Who Goes

Choices narrowing down as who leaves or who stays on the White House staff.

From Denny: President Obama's Closed Inner Circle Model is really not serving the President well at all. Sometimes, you just have to bring in outside people who were not part of the original campaign that got you into the White House. Within the first six months it is evident which staff members do not transition well from campaign mode to governing mode. With this White House the President has taken far too long - two years - to consider the obvious changes.

The one most in need of leaving and returning to the campaign trail is David Axelrod. He just can't get his head into the governing game, putting off needed legislation and actions that should have been started by the time the President when he first took office. Most notably, Axelrod never took it seriously the economic condition of the country and how  necessary it was for the government to respond faster.

Axelrod is said to be leaving his senior advisor role "sometime in the Spring." Are you kidding? This guy has been destructive to the progressive-liberal agenda in favor of placating corporate  money.  He is also slower than molasses in everything he does.  It's how he rolls - or doesn't roll.

What he should be doing to prepare for the President's re-election campaign is to leave now. He has no time to lose, given the mood of the country. To get him into campaign mindset he should go back to Chicago and help Rahm Emanuel get elected to mayor. Then it will be the holiday season and before you know it, then the New Year is upon us. There is a lot to organize for such a massive campaign.  He has been out of the campaign harness for two years now.

Axelrod has no sense of urgency and it is precisely that cavalier attitude that hurts him - and especially those around him. Send him on his way, Mr. President so he can get into gear and be on time for your re-election campaign. Follow your instincts and don't allow Axelrod to yet again "spin" you.

As to former Senator Daschle as the top pick for a permanent Chief of Staff: get him.  The Republicans may grouse a bit but they will get over it.  In comparison they will much prefer Daschle's smooth style to Rahm's abrasive style - and so will the progressive and liberal wings of the Democratic Party.

As to Press Secretary, perhaps Gibbs will be happier as a senior advisor - but he will have to watch his temper in public.  Working with Daschle could teach him the studied finesse he needs to be more effective - especially in the area of  "thinking on his feet."  No easy task and it takes time to hone that skill but Gibbs is up to the task.

And while you are at it, get a lot more women on your team.  A sprinkling just doesn't get it.  Also, quit backing down like you did on Elizabeth Warren when Wall Street squawked.  They are a selfish greedy bunch who do not have the country's best interest - or yours. "Can you hear me now?" :)

Is BP Fund Czar Feinberg in BPs Pocket?

The lies and promises unfulfilled keep coming from BP and Feinberg, the BP Fund Claims Czar.

From Denny: Something is terribly fishy here with Kenneth Feinberg. One minute he promises to make the Gulf Coast whole after the BP Oil Spill disaster and the next he is denying legitimate claims all over the place. Ridiculous conditions for receiving payments shift and change with the tides.

BP continues to run insulting ads claiming how great they are, how much they have spent on "clean up" and what great care they are taking for the residents on the Gulf Coast. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

BP and Feinberg have been playing games with the claimants for five months now. BP thinks because they threw in an American as CEO to sell the same stink it would work. Right now Louisiana is so fed up with British Petroleum that we say, "Go home across The Pond and take your lying idiot American CEO with you!"

The latest insult is BP deducting what they have already paid for clean up from the $5 billion they are supposed to pay out this year to Gulf Coast residents. BP has devastated the Louisiana seafood industry to the tune of being off by 70 percent.

Then the oil moratorium had a ripple effect throughout the state while the President tries to get BP and other oil companies to actually get safety inspections. All the state's economy has been down dramatically since April and this moratorium continues to keep a choke hold on the local economy. Home foreclosures are exceptionally high now in south Louisiana because of this two-fist punch: the oil spill and now the oil moratorium that sees no end in sight.

To date Feinberg and BP have really been playing a waiting game to see if they can delay payments long enough that the small businesses and individuals declare bankruptcy, falling off their books of claims. Talk about a Vulture Culture attitude.

When the storm of criticism gets too loud to ignore, suddenly Feinberg acts like he's going to suddenly do the right thing - and then it's business as usual. He ends up insulting the claimants by giving them 10 percent of what they are owed.

Here we go again with the promises from Feinberg that never happen: "Over the past few weeks, I have heard from the people of the Gulf, elected officials, and others that payments remain too slow and not generous enough. I am implementing new procedures that will make this program more efficient, more accelerated and more generous."

Feinberg claims he is just now getting around to sorting the claims by industry? "Claims from now on also will be sorted by industry to allow those reviewing the claims to apply a more specific, uniform set of standards when deciding how much a person or business will be paid." And why did he not do that months ago? "Claims still will be reviewed individually but they will be clustered so they are easier to compare," he said.

To date Feinberg and BP claim they have paid out $400 million to 30,000 claimants. Show me the books. Let's see some transparency here. I guarantee you will find plenty of examples of $500,000 claims where they only paid out a mere $5,000.

Feinberg keeps throwing up obstacles. First it's the documentation to prove a claim is legitimate. People comply. One guy complied with 1,500 pages of documentation. So, Feinberg said that was too much documentation and so his claim was denied. It's a sick joke how they are treating these people.

Another outrageous condition was that only if you live within one mile of the shore and work on the water for a living will you be eligible for a claim. Clearly, Feinberg over promised and is not serving the President well at all. His promises keep changing, his conditions keep shifting and the claims keep getting denied.

The latest insult of new conditions was that wages earned by spill cleanup workers would be subtracted from their claims of lost revenue. Now, after the furor, Feinberg is publicly claiming he will waive that condition. What happens when the news crews go home? What will happen in private? More new conditions?

When I say that something smells fishy here it's because it does. BP has a habit of bribing people with promises of throwing business their way after the situation subsides. Feinberg sure changed his tune quickly once he started interacting a lot with BP. He can claim all he wants that he has not been turned by the glitter of the huge money from the multi-national giant but it sure looks like he has fallen into the integrity abyss.

Mr. President, you would do well to hire someone like Mike Papantonio, a liberal talk show host in Texas who is also a lawyer. This man has taken BP to court numerous times and knows how they roll in the business world. Papantonio might be a wise idea to look over the should of Feinberg to keep him and his firm honest. Otherwise, you will continue to hear howling from the Gulf Coast for years to come. Wouldn't it be easier to either replace Feinberg - or have someone else checking on him?

Wars Overseas, Wars in Congress, Wars in White House, New Book: Obamas Wars

Wars overseas, wars in Congress and wars in the White House are why our government is not working.

From Denny: Were there really any surprises here? For the past 20 months the President and his staff have argued about the Iraq and Afghan Wars. OK, debate is always a good idea but it seems they are as mired as the Army generals running the wars. Come on, guys, after 7 years for one and 9 years for the other, isn't it about time to call it quits? You have worn out the goodwill of the public and our wallets.

"Obama's Wars" by veteran journalist Bob Woodward portrays a deeply divided White House. Few believed this troop surge would work. Obama wanted faster results from his generals. The generals do what generals do: Tell everyone else they are stupid, we know what we are doing and don't question us.

It turns out that originally Obama did not want to escalate in Afghanistan because he rightly felt he only had two years with the American public and then they would want out of the country. Clearly, the President desired an exit strategy. Guess the Taliban surge changed that idea. When he set a timetable for withdrawal Obama said he had to do it: "I can't lose the whole Democratic Party."

Woodward also stated that the CIA is running an all-Afghan 3,000 strong paramilitary group in Afghanistan to hunt down the Taliban and other al-Qaida targets. It was confirmed today by the usual anonymous sources.

A couple of favorite quotes from the book:

Vice President Biden, known for his spicy candor, called former Clinton administration Richard Holbrooke "the most egotistical bastard I've ever met." Agreed. How a guy with that much bad attitude could ever make it as a diplomat is a mystery.

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, fussed about his vice chairman, Gen. James Cartwright, for "going behind his back." Control freak general.

Cartwright blew off Mullen because he "wasn't a war fighter." Childish general who thinks he doesn't have to respect anyone.

Gen. David Petraeus, the new Afghanistan commander, remarked he disliked talking with David Axelrod, the president's senior adviser, because he was "a complete spin doctor." Agreed; the guy is totally tone deaf, ineffective and a lousy choice for a senior advisor when all his decisions have been disastrous.

More in house fighting? Adm. Dennis Blair, then the national intelligence director, duked it out with Rahm Emanuel, White House chief of staff, and John Brennan, the counter-terrorism adviser. Guess the guy likes overwhelming odds.

Woodward also reported about there was intelligence depicting Afghan President Hamid Karzai was diagosed as manic-depressive and on medication. In a country like that where you sweat out staying alive from minute to minute who wouldn't be on meds? Of course, the Karzai team denies it.

Let's hope President Obama changes out a number of his team in favor of people who will work together to solve problems instead of staking out the usual turf wars. Either that or hire a group of referees because it looks like they are going to need them.

Obamas Popularity, Polls Roundup of American Opinion - 16 Sept 2010

Check out this week's polling of Americans from the President's approval rating, tax cuts, anti-Muslim feelings to frustration with our politicians. From Denny: Prez Obama is not faring well with this week's polling for his popularity due to slow economic progress. Only 45 percent say they approve compared to 47 percent who disapprove of his performance after almost two years in office. And this is why I keep pressing this President to develop a serious sense of urgency for enacting and pushing strong economic measures. Yet he and his team continue at much too slow a pace to bring relief to millions of hurting Americans.Interestingly enough the disapproval in this poll is not based upon disgust, dislike or disappointment but rather how this President did not meet their expectations of what they thought he would do in office. Most Americans view the economy as the most pressing issue facing the country and this is where President Obama received the most wide ranging criticism. Traditionally, Democrats are usually much more attentive and fire in the belly when it comes to tending the home fires of the economy. People are surprised this sense of urgency does not exist with this White House. For that perception, right or wrong, the President is ranked at only a 41 percent approval rating. The disapproval camp weighs in at 51 percent.Sixty percent of Americans view the President as not having made any real progress at fixing the economy. A majority of 53 percent complain he still does not have a clear plan for creating jobs.As to the blame game for who screwed up the economy, it's President George W. Bush who still receives the majority of those "accolades," along with Wall Street. Bush is blamed for 37 percent of the problem, Wall Street gets 21 percent and Congress gets its share at 11 percent. Only five percent blame Obama. The general feeling is unhappiness with the direction of the country and most especially the economy. Yet 63 percent have decided that Obama's time in the White House is about what they had expected. I'm amazed this country is still standing considering the mess the Republicans left the country through neglect or bad policies. As to the country's pessimists? A little over one in four complain the President's performance is worse than expected - that included 17 percent of Democrats. Of course, those who are the loudest complainers are Republicans. No surprises there. The sad thing is that only a handful say that Obama has exceeded their expectations. Ouch. When polling those who voted for Obama in 2008 the numbers broke down to the majority of 67 percent figured his performance is as was expected. Those who thought his performance as worse came to 19 percent. Those who thought his performance was better than expected came to 12 percent. Not enough progress on the economy39 percent thinks Obama has a clear plan57 percent think he does notWhat about Republicans and their plan for the economy?72 percent say the Republicans don't have a plan. Read that as the Republicans are viewed as clueless and useless. So how did the President fare this week (15 Sept) with his popularity among his Democratic base?76 percent of Democrats approveWhere are the pivotal Independents on Obama's job rating?49 percent of Independents disapprove 42 percent who approve of his jobWhat's on the mind of Americans when it comes to the economy?60 percent say it is the most important problem facing the country8 in 10 think the economy is somewhat bad1 in 5 thinks the economy is getting better6 in 10 voters are somewhat concerned that someone in their household will lose their job in the next 12 monthsDemocrats vs. Republicans on Obama's fixing of the economy87 percent of Republicans claim Obama has made no progress54 percent of Democrats claim Obama has made some progressIt breaks down to 6 in 10 say the President has made no progress on fixing the economy. Yet twice as many Americans also view Obama as making more effort to work on fixing the economy than Republicans in Congress. The jury still seems to be out on how much effect on the economy the 2009 stimulus package has had.30 percent thinks the economy is better20 percent thinks the economy is now worse46 percent thinks the stimulus really hasn't had any real impactRead those opinions as comparing the economy as to when a person is severely ill, well, he didn't die - yet. Definitely another Ouch factor on this question. What were the opinions on the stimulus package?34 percent thought it was too large27 percent thought it was not large enough28 percent thought it was about rightHow did the opinion on the controversial health care reform fare?49 percent disapprove37 percent approveThat broke down along party lines with most Democrats in the approval category. Independents and Republicans strongly disapprove. Congress and the President need to sit down with the health care law and tinker with it. Why? Because health care premiums continue to rise, especially for small business. A friend told us last week that his small company health care insurance premiums just rose another 17 percent. For now he is going to "eat" the rise but he doesn't know how long he can hold out before he is forced to pass it along to his employees given the current state of the economy.Of the those disapproving of the health care law, 82 percent say they want it repealed. However, that number drops sharply to only 48 percent if insurance companies are no longer required to cover people with existing medical conditions or prior illnesses. Funny thing how self-preservation trumps Republican rhetoric. So how is President Obama doing when it comes to the Afghan War?Looks like everyone is united on this disapproval in the Democrat, Republican and Independent camps: 55 percent think it is going badly.Where the parties do split on opinion:51 percent of Republicans think America is doing the right thing fighting thereMost Democrats and Independents think America should not be involvedFor the past year the overall opinion of remaining in Afghanistan as the right thing to do has slipped down to only 38 percent approval when it was a slight majority just last year in October. What is the opinion of the Iraq War?Only 23 percent think the war was worth the loss of American life and other high costs - even after pulling out the combat troopsOverwhelmingly, both Democrats and Independents say the war simply was not worth it. Republicans are divided on that question.Poll: Obama Approval Rating Mixed, but Most See No Economic ProgressPoll: Most Want New Blood in Congress"Fifty-five percent, by contrast, say it's time to give someone new a chance. That's up from 47 percent in 2006 and 27 percent in 2004. "Asked about most members of Congress, voters are even harsher: just 12 percent say they deserve reelection, while 78 percent want someone new. Those figures are similar to findings in 2006, when Democrats took control of Congress, as well as 1994, when Republicans took over."Poll: Most Americans Want Tax Cuts for the Rich to Expire"Fifty-three percent of Americans agree with Mr. Obama that the tax cuts for the wealthy should be allowed to expire, while 38 percent do not, according to the poll, conducted Sept. 10-14."Two of three Democrats think it is a good idea, and most independents (55 percent) agree. Most Republicans (57 percent) think it is a bad idea."Poll: Most Know Those With Anti-Muslim Feeling"Fifty-five percent say they know someone who has negative feelings toward Muslims tied to the September 11th attacks, while roughly one in five say they themselves have such feelings. Forty percent say they don't know anyone with such feelings, and three in four say they don't personally harbor them. "Seventy-one percent, meanwhile, say that it is at least somewhat likely that Arab Americans, Muslims, and immigrants from the Middle East are being discriminated against in America."*** THANKS for visiting, feel welcome to drop a comment or opinion, enjoy bookmarking this post on your favorite social site, a big shout out to awesome current subscribers – and if you are new to this blog, please subscribe in a reader or by email updates! *** Come by for a visit and check out my other blogs:The Social Poets - news, politicsThe Soul Calendar - science, astronomy, psychologyVisual Insights - photos, art, musicBeautiful Illustrated Quotations - spiritual quotes, philosophyPoems From A Spiritual Heart - poetryThe Healing Waters - health newsDennys People Watching - people in the newsDennys Food and RecipesDennys Funny Quotes - humor

Middle East Peace, Koran Burning, Iraq War Cartoons - 11 Sept 2010

The threatened burning of 200 Korans took center stage this week over the Middle East Peace process with the public and the cartoonists. From Denny: The President continues to take criticism for doing the right thing - trying to broker a Middle East Peace solution of some kind between Israel and Palestine. You just can't ignore this Middle Eastern tinderbox like George Bush did. It's important to do something, no matter how small to advance a temporary solution. A little progress is preferable to full scale war and bloodshed. It's amazing how the Republicans - who fancy themselves as such great foreign policy advisers - have fallen down on the job with this thorny issue. All they do is harp against the President and step on his face as he tries to do some serious diplomatic work. But that's the point, now isn't it? The Republicans are so crazed to get back in power they don't care how they risk the lives of Americans traveling overseas or the American troops in the Middle East. Selfish is as selfish does when it comes to winner take all politics. So, the Republicans - and their propaganda arm Fox News - took another tack and decided to stir up the Religious Right like the no name Florida pastor who thought he was tough on Islamic terrorists by announcing he was going to burn 200 Koran books. What an idiot. His church bears the emblem of the Holy Spirit and the Peace Dove and yet this guy is out there promoting violence, in complete disobedience and rebellion against the teachings of the very Jesus Christ he claims to follow. What a fool. Meanwhile, the troops overseas are horrified at what he has done. It took the Secretary of Defense Gates to call a Florida imam to help lower the political and religious temperature with this crazed excuse for a Christian pastor. Hundreds of Christians pastors called this guy to ask him to stand down and he refused. It took the local fire ordinances and federal hate crime laws to shut down the stupidity - or that's how it appears on the surface. The reality of how these situations play out is that the FBI receives credible evidence of real death threats against this pastor and his family - if he still carries out his threat to burn the Korans. My guess is that the FBI did receive numerous letters detailing where the pastor, his family and closest friends and church members live, their full names and addresses and the like. Detailed information like that cannot be denied. This pastor didn't care how many other people he put at risk for getting killed until it came home to roost up close and personal. My guess is the wife and family told him to back off this lunatic Koran burning party or they were going to be the ones killing him. It's real easy to threaten to harm others - until the backlash of bad karma comes back to threaten a new reality. Majority in Poll Say America Still Not Ready For Big Disasters

*** Our government has a long way to go to convince Americans it can handle large scale natural or man made disasters. From Denny: It's no surprise that most of my fellow Americans believe our government is still not ready to properly handle a big disaster. Pushing the nasty politics aside that the Republicans dished out onto the people of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, the largest American disaster ever, that definitely complicated matters - our government still suffers a lack of quality coordination and fast response times. The truth is that Bush and Cheney had dismantled key components of FEMA and other agencies, preventing them from reacting in a timely fashion and on a large enough scale. President Obama has had so many fires on so many fronts because of how the Republicans have crippled our government from being able to operate that Obama's attention has yet to rest upon restoring key elements of emergency response for inside America. It's been five years since Hurricane Katrina struck on 29 August 2005 and still this great country has yet to get its act together to handle severe emergencies. America is the only nation on this earth that has the most violent weather. With global warming that weather severity has increased. We are foolish not to address our infrastructure vulnerabilities and government responses. And it looks like a lot of America agrees that America still isn't ready - even after five years and now an oil spill disaster. This oil spill just highlighted how much our government agencies have to learn and how much Congress needs to get busy reining in and penalizing Big Business for running such shoddy operations that risk the economy and the safety of the American people. The nonpartisan Pew Research Center poll released today had these results where they surveyed equal numbers of Democrats, Republicans and Independents:* 57 percent say the country has not improved its disaster preparations* 38 percent said the country is more ready than it was.* 69 percent think progress has been made rebuilding New Orleans and the Gulf (As a Louisiana blogger I can tell you that we have made great strides).* People in the South - which includes Gulf Coast states - feel most strongly about it, with 75 percent saying progress has been made. In other regions, a combined 66 percent see progress. * Only 63 percent of Democrats were convinced than Republicans and Independents, saying reconstruction has moved ahead. * Pew conducted the poll from Aug. 19-22, interviewing 1,003 randomly chosen adults by telephone, including those on landlines and cell phones. The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 4 percentage points.Poll: 57% Say U.S. Still Not Ready for DisastersFive Years after Katrina, Just 38% of Respondents Think Country Is Better Prepared to Handle Natural Disasters*** NASA Photo of Hurricane Katrina *** THANKS for visiting, feel welcome to drop a comment or opinion, enjoy bookmarking this post on your favorite social site, a big shout out to awesome current subscribers – and if you are new to this blog, please subscribe in a reader or by email updates!

Doctor Says Kids Suffer More From Gulf Oil Spill

*** Check out the long term impact this BP oil spill has on America's children in the Gulf region.BP oil spill at sunsetFrom Denny: Dr. Irwin Redlener, of the Children's Health Fund, talks about the psychological impact of this oil spill upon children. A study from Columbia University states that children from the Gulf coast region are twice as likely to experience mental and physical problems than other children in the nation. Because of recent events, including the BP oil spill, these children require long term care.Since the beginning of the BP Gulf oil spill, parents have reported their children have developed new rashes and breathing difficulties since the oil spill began. www.FreeClinics.US is wanting to sponsor a free clinic in New Orleans, Louisiana to help address the many health needs of local residents because of this oil spill. They are still far short of the necessary funding to conduct the two day clinic on 31 August to 1 September. It seems that the much trumpeted new health care law has yet to reach down to regular people to make much of a positive difference - at least in the Gulf region. Those free clinics donations have sponsored across America for a mere $2 million have helped over 9,000 people who could not afford health care. They prevented seven suicides, did three open-heart surgeries and helped a man who had been misdiagnosed with HIV to find out to his much relief that he did not have the disease. Activated were an astounding 8,500 volunteers.Dr. Redlener spells out the five factors of what Gulf coast residents are dealing with: a slow economic recovery, previous trauma from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, looming hurricanes currently in the Gulf region, 25 percent of stressed out families are discussing a mass exodus out of Louisiana to never return, and now psychological and physical problems brought on by the BP oil spill. They have a fear their government will abandon them again. And it sure looks like it while the White House and BP are tripping all over themselves to wrap up this oil spill and declare it "mission accomplished."Perhaps this long term care project for America's Gulf coast children would be a good project for First Lady Michelle Obama to champion. She's already begun dealing with obesity in America's children. How about making sure these Gulf coast kids get the long term help they need?

The state of Maryland is reporting the new health care law has cut their costs in half to the tune of $869 million. Not too shabby. This is a good start. The President still should put in a public option in order to bring the high profit margins of the health insurance industry to heel. The families of victims are furious at the insensitivity.
